Following your tooth extractions, bite down gently on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes, or until the bleeding stops. Change out the gauze as needed.
After the bleeding has stopped, it is important that you do not dislodge the blood clot. You should avoid the following activities for 72 hours after your extraction:
- Rinsing vigorously
- Sucking on straws
- Smoking
- Drinking alcohol
- Brushing the teeth next to the extraction site
We also recommend that you do not exercise vigorously for 24 hours, as this may cause more bleeding.
You can manage swelling and pain by placing an ice pack, cold compress, or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn over the area of the extraction. Please use pain medications and antibiotics as directed. Your swelling should diminish after about 48 hours.
On the day of the extraction, drink lots of fluids and eat soft, nutritious foods. You may resume eating normally as soon as you feel comfortable. Return to your regular dental routine after 24 hours, including daily brushing and flossing.
If you experience heavy bleeding, severe pain, or continued swelling for 2-3 days, or if you have a reaction to any prescribed medications, please contact our office at 434-977-9836.
