In several cases, Dr. Ben B. Ross and Dr Sharon Vincenty may need to perform a pre-prosthetic surgery before starting your prosthetic treatment. This is most common when patients require dentures but need to smooth out their jawbone prior to fitting their dentures to their smile. During your consultations and pre-treatment visits, our prosthodontist can evaluate your condition and help you know if you require a pre-prosthetic surgery. These procedures are designed to make your prosthesis work more efficiently and fit more comfortably. If you have questions about our pre-prosthetic surgery instructions, please contact Pantops Prosthodontics at 434-977-9836.
Dentures sit on the bone ridge, making it crucial that your bone be the proper shape and size. If you have had a tooth extracted in preparation for dentures, that underlying bone may also be sharp and uneven. To achieve the ideal fit of your prosthetic, the bone may need to be smoothed out or reshaped, or excess bone may need to be removed before the dentures can be placed.
One or more of the following procedures may be required to prepare your mouth for dentures:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping
- Removal of excess bone tissue
- Bone ridge reduction
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Exposure of impacted teeth
